Dodgers Wanted Miguel Vargas To Work On Defense

The Los Angeles Dodgers previously optioned Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City following their acquisition of Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays last week.

Playing time was scarce for Vargas as he only played in eight games since being called up on May 17. He was effective despite the limited at-bats, going 5-for-20 with three doubles and one home run.

Vargas has shown enough with the bat to warrant a bigger role, but the missing piece holding him back from receiving consistent playing time this season had to do with his defense and lack of experience in the outfield.

“It was a tough one. Vargy, I really do feel he’s a Major League ballplayer,” Roberts said after the decision to option him. “I think that just to go out there and have the opportunity to play every day is important for his development, which is the truth. And also, just continue to take repetitions out in the left field, which I think he needs to continue to get better at.”

Despite his previous infield experience, Vargas has been limited to playing left field in both the Majors and Minors this season, but there have been growing pains at the new position.

Vargas has been a plus hitter at the plate this season, but he is going to have to become a legitimate outfield option if he wants a chance to get in the lineup on a consistent basis with the Dodgers. However, he still projects to be a starting piece for their outfield starting next season and beyond.

Miguel Vargas returning to Dodgers

Vargas is now expected to rejoin the Dodgers to replace Mookie Betts on the roster after the shortstop sustained a fractured left hand. Roberts added Vargas will start in left field against left-handed pitching.

IF he produces, it would not be surprising to see him take on a large role as the Dodgers are in-need of offense with Betts out. However, his defense may ultimately continue to limit his playing time.
