Dodgers Vs. Padres Game Preview: Gavin Lux Back In Lineup For Series Opener At Petco Park

After going 6-1 on their first homestand of the regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are back on the road for the start of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Dodgers enter Friday’s matchup with a 9-3 record, which is good for first place in the National League West. The Padres, at 9-5, are one full game behind their rival in the standings.

L.A. has a nine-game winning streak against San Diego, which dates back to last season and includes taking three in a row at Petco Park. The Dodgers have not lost a season series to the Padres since going 8-10 in their head-to-head meetings during the 2010 season.

Julio Urías makes his third start of the year and looks to build on a strong outing against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed only one hit and collected five strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

It marked an improvement from his 2022 opener against the Colorado Rockies in which Urías pitched just two-plus innings.

“Obviously going into a second start, made some adjustments with my mechanics and felt really good,” Urías said of his performance against the Reds.

The Padres counter with Nick Martinez, who also makes his third start of the season. He was tabbed with a loss in his last start against the Atlanta Braves, allowing four runs on seven hits across five innings pitched.

Martinez signed a one-year contract with the Padres during the offseason that includes player options for the 2023-25 seasons. The right-hander, who began his career with the Texas Rangers, spent the previous four seasons pitching in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

As expected, Gavin Lux is back in the Dodgers lineup, starting at second base and batting ninth. The 24-year-old missed the final two games of the Braves series due to back tightness.

However, the Dodgers remain without Blake Treinen, who was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder discomfort. Treinen last pitched April 14 and was expected to be available this weekend after being held out of the entirety of the Braves series.

The Dodgers recalled Garrett Cleavinger from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Treinen’s place on the active roster.
