Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Likely Making 2025 Debut During Marlins Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to activate Tony Gonsolin off the 15-day injured list for a start Wednesday in the series finale against the Miami Marlins.

Gonsolin was back at Dodger Stadium for the start of the team’s homestand and he threw a bullpen session before Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said it would “make a lot of sense” for Gonsolin to start Wednesday.

The Dodgers rotation currently has a need for a starter on Tuesday, but that figures to be a bullpen game so that Gonsolin could then be inserted into the rotation the following day and thus push Yoshinobu Yamamoto back to Friday to keep on his once-per-week schedule.

Starting pitching was expected to be a strength for the Dodgers but that’s yet to be the case in the early going of the 2025 season.

It’s been partly due to injuries, which began with Gonsolin starting the season on the 15-day injured list because of a back issue that surfaced while lifting weights during a workout late into Spring Training. It eliminated Gonsolin from consideration for the fifth spot in the Opening Day rotation that was taken by Dustin May.

Whenever Gonsolin makes his way into a game for the Dodgers, it will represent his first time pitching at the Major League level since Aug. 18, 2023. He underwent Tommy John surgery on Sept. 1, 2023, and made a late push to return at the end of last season before the Dodgers decided to shift his focus to 2025.

The offseason saw the team sign Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki, which Gonsolin acknowledged felt to feeling slightly overlooked.

“We just can’t forget how good Tony has been for us when he’s healthy,” Roberts said during Spring Training. “I’m certainly not sleeping on Tony. I think he’s going to be good for us.”

Tony Gonsolin’s rehab assigmnet

Although the Dodgers faced a need in their rotation last week, they stuck with keeping Gonsolin on his rehab assignment in order to reach five innings.

Gonsolin made four rehab starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. He struck out 16 batters and issued six walks over 14 innings pitched.
