The Los Angeles Dodgers added Amed Rosario to their active roster and optioned Yonny Hernández to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.
Rosario is making his Dodgers debut on Friday night, starting at shortstop and batting fifth. He was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Noah Syndergaard.
Rosario once was regarded among the top prospects in baseball for the New York Mets and considered a potential five-tool player. However, Rosario has had limited success since making his MLB debut in 2017.
The 27-year-old hit .265/.306/.369 with three home runs, 40 RBI, 51 runs scored, nine stolen bases and an 86 wRC+ with the Guardians this season. What Rosario does excel at is hitting left-handed pitching, batting .303/.345/.477 with a 123 wRC+.
Rosario is in his final year of salary arbitration and will become a free agent after the 2023 season.
Although the roster move was not announced until Friday, Hernández was in the OKC lineup the night prior for their road game against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate). Hernández started at third base and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts from the leadoff spot.
Overall with OKC this season, he is batting .254/.399/.376 with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 25 RBI and a 100 wRC+ in 48 games. Hernández has played shortstop and third base for Oklahoma City, along with making one start as the designated hitter.
Yonny Hernández’s time on Dodgers roster
The 25-year-old has twice been recalled by the Dodgers this season. The first instance was April 19, as the corresponding move to Miguel Rojas going on the 10-day injured list due a left hamstring strain.
Hernández made his Dodgers debut with a pinch-hit appearance against the New York Mets before getting optioned back to OKC the following day when Mookie Betts returned from paternity leave.
Hernández returned to the Major League level June 25 due to Chris Taylor being put on the 10-day IL. He remained up with the team until Friday’s roster move.
Although Hernández’s latest stint with the Dodgers spanned 25 games, he only appeared in 13 of those, with four being starts.
