The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from the New York Yankees.
A subsequent 40-man roster move was not required as the Dodgers had an open spot from designating Eddie Rosario for assignment last week when Shohei Ohtani returned from the paternity list.
Gómez was himself was DFA’d by the Yankees this week. That came after appearing in just six games for New York this season.
Gómez had been part of the Yankees organization since signing as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela in 2016. He developed into a top-30 prospect in the Yankees farm system and was added onto the team’s 40-man roster in November 2020 to be protected from possibly getting selected in the annual Rule 5 Draft.
However, time at the Major League level has been few and far between for the 25-year-old. Some of that is tied to Gómez undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021.
Gómez made his MLB debut in 2023 and also had three separate stints in the Yankees bullpen last season. Over parts of three years while up with the Yankees, Gómez is a career 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA, 5.47 FIP and 1.41 WHIP in 12 games.
In his six games this year before the Yankees’ DFA decision, Gómez was 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and five strikeouts over 10 innings pitched.
In seven Minor League seasons, he is a career 12-17 with a 3.49 ERA in 101 games.
Dodgers role for Yoendrys Gómez?
Gómez could serve as some immediate depth for a Dodgers bullpen that’s taken on a heavy workload to begin the season and is currently without several expected contributors.
Otherwise, he figures to spend time with Triple-A Oklahoma City while waiting for a potential opportunity with the Dodgers.
Gómez is out of Minor League options, which would require the Dodgers to DFA him if they were to add the reliever to their active roster and look to remove him at some point after.
