Dodgers Roster: Shohei Ohtani Returns From Paternity Leave, Eddie Rosario Designated For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Shohei Ohtani off the paternity list and designated Eddie Rosario for assignment prior to the series finale against the Texas Rangers.

Per MLB roster rules, Ohtani was required to miss at least one day but no more than three while on the paternity list. Thus, Saturday was technically the earliest he could return and Monday — an off day on the Dodgers’ schedule — was the latest.

Ohtani played in every game this season before Friday. He’s batting .288/.380/.550 with one double, one triple, six home runs and eight RBI. Ohtani trails Tommy Edman (seven) for the team lead in home runs.

Rosario had his contract selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City when Ohtani went on paternity leave before the first game at Globe Life Field. Edgardo Henriquez was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Rosario on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

Rosario was in the Dodgers lineup for their last two games, starting both as the designated hitter. Rosario went hitless in his Dodgers debut and was 1-for-2 in their loss on Saturday.

The Dodgers signed Rosario in February to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invite to Spring Training. He didn’t make much of an impact during Cactus League play but got off to a hot start with the Oklahoma City Comets.

In 14 games before joining the Dodgers roster, Rosario hit .339/.406/.542 with six doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. the veteran outfielder spent last season with the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

Shohei Ohtani becomes father to daughter

Ohtani announced on Instagram his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, gave birth to a girl.

“Welcome to the Ohtani Family!” Ohtani wrote in the couple’s baby announcement. “I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter. To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.

“I would also like to thank the Dodgers organization, my teammates, and the fans for their constant support and kind words of encouragement.

“I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals and everyone who dedicated their support to us, up until this wonderful day.”
