The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Bobby Miller and placed Walker Buehler on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation.
Miller returns Wednesday to start in the third game of the Dodgers’ series against the Colorado Rockies. The start is Miller’s second of his career at Coors Field.
He threw seven innings and allowed just two runs while collecting nine strikeouts as a rookie in the Rockies’ home ballpark last year.
Miller had been on the injured list since April 13 (retroactive to April 10) because of right shoulder inflammation. An MRI did not reveal any structural damage, which the Dodgers and Miller were encouraged by.
Miller anticipated making a quick return but that didn’t come to pass, as his absence instead spanned two months. The right-hander made four starts while on a rehab assignment He is poised to be activated after completing a rehab assignment that comprised of four starts.
The outings were split evenly between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City, and saw Miller allow at least three earned runs in three of the four starts.
Miller made just three starts before going on the injured list because of his right shoulder trouble. He went 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in those outings with the Dodgers.
The most recent of which was Thursday, when Miller allowed five runs on six hits and issued three walks over 4.2 innings.
“The results weren’t good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged after Miller allowed five runs on six hits and issued three walks over 4.2 innings of what ended up being his final rehab outing.
“I’m sure we’ll have a conversation but I expect him to make his next start with us.”
Roberts went on to confirm Miller’s return to the Dodgers rotation the following day.
Walker Buehler searching
When the date of Miller returning was originally set, Roberts said the Dodgers would temporarily have a six-man starting rotation. However, they have since absorbed two injuries to starting pitchers.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto was lost to a right rotator cuff strain, and now Buehler is on the IL one day after taking a comeback off his hip.
Though, Buehler indicated after struggling against the Rockies that he likely was headed toward some sort of break anyhow amid ongoing struggles and inconsistency since coming back from a second Tommy John surgery.
Buehler is 1-4 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in eight starts this season.
