The Los Angeles Dodgers made a flurry of roster moves before Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which included placing veteran southpaw Cole Hamels on the 60-day injured list.
The move ends Hamels’ season before it even began as he has yet to throw a pitch for the Dodgers after being signed for $1 million two weeks ago. Hamels was working to build up his arm strength with the expectation he would join the roster by Sept. 2.
The four-time All-Star was scheduled to throw a two-inning simulated game on Aug. 7, but it was cut short after just one frame and a few additional pitches.
At the time Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated Hamels was fine and the team had already seen him throw enough. However, on Sunday, Roberts said he didn’t know how much Hamels was built up and expected to talk to him “in the next day or two.”
Last season, the now-37-year-old only made one start for the Atlanta Braves before he was shut down due to shoulder inflammation and fatigue.
For the Dodgers, the hope is they can still get Clayton Kershaw and potentially Tony Gonsolin back in time to start games before the regular season ends.
Dodgers call up Andre Jackson, Neftalí Féliz
The Dodgers recalled Andre Jackson and selected the contract of Neftalí Féliz, who took Hamels’ spot on the 40-man roster.
Edwin Uceta and Darien Núñez were optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the active roster for Jackson and Féliz.
Jackson is one of the Dodgers’ top pitching prospects and he represented the club in the 2021 Futures Games.
Féliz signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers during the first week of July. He made one appearance for the Philadelphia Phillies prior to being outrighted and joining L.A.
Féliz has appeared in 13 games for Oklahoma City, going 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
