Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Kyle Hurt was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for his performance with Triple-A Oklahoma City during the period of September 4-10.
Fellow Dodgers prospect Jake Gelof also was recognized, winning California League Player of the Week behind a strong showing with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Hurt, who spent most of his season with Double-A Tulsa was called up to Oklahoma City on August 2. On September 7, he pitched five innings of innings of one-hit ball while collecting six strikeouts against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston Astros affiliate).
The Dodgers acquired Hurt along with Alex Vesia in a trade from the Miami Marlins for Dylan Floro in 2021.
Hurt has averaged 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings since joining OKC. His tremendous ability to get swings and misses was a factor in the right-hander getting called up to join the Dodgers bullpen.
Gelof had a terrific week for the Quakes, hitting three home runs and collecting 11 RBI. He hit .300/.364/.800 in that period, good enough for a 1.164 on-base plus slugging percentage. On the year, Gelof has hit six home runs in 34 games and produced a .325 on-base percentage.
The Dodgers selected Gelof in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia. He is UVA’s all-time home run leader and was scouted to have some of the most raw power in this year’s Draft.
Kyle Hurt joins group of Dodgers rookies in 2023
Myriad pitching injuries to the Dodgers rotation and bullpen have given tremendous opportunities to the young prospects and rookies in 2023, such as Bobby Miller, Emmet Sheehan, Gavin Stone and Michael Grove.
Hurt joins those young arms in looking to help lead the Dodgers into postseason baseball, and could be a formidable weapon out of the bullpen.
