Prior to Tony Gonsolin being selected to the National League team for the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium, Clayton Kershaw surprised him by paying for a session to get fitted and design a custom suit.

Gonsolin unveiled his look on the All-Star Game red carpet at L.A. Live, stepping out in a purple suit jacket with matching pants and bow tie. He completed the outfit with a top hat and sky blue dress shirt.

Gonsolin also was sure to incorporate his love for cats by adding two paw prints underneath the left pocket and a cheetah print lining. The paws represented Gonsolin’s cats, Blue and Tigger.

“I still had not seen it until today,” Kershaw said after making his first career All-Star Game start.

“I thought it looked pretty good. I don’t think I could pull it off, but I think he did pretty good with it. There’s definitely a lot of cat theme in there. I’m happy for him. I think he was really excited about it. He looked great.”

Gonsolin, who previously expressed his gratitude for Kershaw picking up the tab, believed he delivered a look that was well received.

“I thought it was pretty good, a favorite. I think everyone said it looked pretty sharp,” Gonsolin said. “I thought it looked really good. The cat paws were a huge hit.”

While Kershaw worked a scoreless inning against the American League, Gonsolin surrendered back-to-back home runs to Giancarlo Stanton and Byron Buxton in the third inning and was tabbed with the loss.

“It sucks. I tried to go out there and do my best, and made one really bad pitch to Stanton there and he made me pay, for sure,” Gonsolin said. “Buxton, I don’t really know how he hit that one, honestly. Just kind of tip your cap. … At the end of the day I was still an All-Star, got to be selected and pitch in it.

“At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t count for anything. Get them out of town and we’ll get a clean start for the second half.”
