Despite the regular season drawing to a close, the Los Angeles Dodgers have continued to make further additions to their jam-packed 2018 promotional and giveaway calendar.
The club recently announced that they will distribute their first-ever digital bobbleheads on Friday, Sept. 21, prior to a matchup with the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium.
Ticketed fans will have the option of downloading a Kenley Jansen, Clayton Kershaw or Justin Turner bobblehead in what’s the first Crypto giveaway in Major League Baseball history.
Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling isn’t too keen on the idea, as he doesn’t see much purpose in the club distributing a digital bobblehead over a more traditional physical one, via Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times:
“It may have some value of some sort because it’s the first of its kind,” Stripling said, “but at the end of the day, I just don’t see it holding a lot of value.”
“It’s basically trading something that doesn’t exist for real money,” Stripling said. “That’s what cryptocurrency is. I think it’s basically me handing you a box of air. And then, in six months, you hand me that box of air back and say it’s double the price.”
Stripling, a noted stockbroker, clearly is down on the concept of cryptocurrency, given its unpredictable nature.
While it remains to be seen if the digital bobblehead winds up holding value over time, it’s nevertheless another innovative idea that the Dodgers are happy to present to the sports world.
