Championship Saturday saw conference titles decided and a clearer picture of the College Football Playoff take shape as the likes of Alabama, Baylor, Cincinnati, Michigan and Pittsburgh were among those to emerge victorious.
In the case of the Crimson Tide, Bearcats and Wolverines, winning their respective conference put them in the final four and in position to potentially capture a national title. There was some thought the Bears would sneak in after being crowned Big 12 champions.
However, Baylor finished ranked fifth in the final standings, one spot behind Cincinnati for the final berth in the College Football Playoff.
Baylor nevertheless ended their regular season with a thrilling victory over Oklahoma State, which Max Muncy and his wife Kellie were in attendance for at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The Muncys attended Baylor and have maintained ties to the university since graduating.
This past April, Muncy and the Bears combined to make history. As Muncy helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to a blowout win against the Oakland Athletics, Baylor defeated Gonzaga in the championship game of the men’s NCCA basketball tournament.
Muncy became the first player in MLB history to have a three-hit game on the same day his college won the Division 1 basketball title. The Dodgers’ slugger was the designated hitter that night, which allowed for ample opportunities to check on the Bears’ score in the clubhouse.
Baylor honors Muncy
Last year Max Muncy was named Baylor’s Young Alumni of the Year, which goes to a graduate age 40 or under who has demonstrated remarkable achievement in the previous year. Muncy was a freshman All-American at Baylor in 2010 and led the Bears in most offensive categories in 2011 prior to being drafted by the A’s.
