Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Prefers Realignment With 3 Divisions Among Various MLB Plans For 2020 Regular Season

Weeks after Major League Baseball indefinitely suspended the start of the 2020 regular season, it was reported one scenario that was discussed called for all 30 teams to play at upwards of 10 Spring Training facilities and Chase Field in Arizona.

Soon after, MLB was said to have mulled over using Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues for division realignment while also doing away with American and National Leagues. Then MLB reportedly begun to explore the viability of using Arizona, Florida and Texas as hubs.

That has since been followed by MLB’s reported preference to have as many teams as possible play at their home ballparks. Of course, that largely hinges on each individual state’s stay at home orders and clearance from public health officials.

That scenario is one Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts prefers among the various plans MLB is believed to be considering, via “Lunchtime with Roggin & Rodney” on AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio:

“I do think the idea that players and coaches are not going to be around their families for any extended period of time, isn’t realistic. I think the mindset that everyone is in lockstep with is being open to something new, something different, something that gets us to the other side.

“The world is looking different now, the world will look different going forward. I think that’s a good thing. So I think the idea that there’s the three divisions, and you’re talking about geography, which makes sense as far as travel, keeping guys as safe as possible, controlled as much as possible. It gives the fans a different look.

“If you’re talking about the West, and you get a chance to see Trout more often, the Astros and Dodgers potentially lining up in the same division, which obviously would add intrigue. I think that makes sense.”

While Roberts raises valid points, some players, including multiple Dodgers, have voiced a willingness to sign off on any plan and circumstances.

For all the debate over which plan best suits MLB, when the season begins is also heavily predicated on access to rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing.
