Just when there appeared to be reason for optimism with the Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation, Gavin Stone was put on the 15-day injured list and Tyler Glasnow suffered a setback in his recovery from right elbow tendinitis.

The latest developments are a disappointing turn of events as the Dodgers just welcomed back Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Glasnow was in line to potentially return as soon as next week. However, he experienced more discomfort in his throwing elbow and couldn’t participate in the simulated game that had been planned for Friday.

Meanwhile, Stone was shut down from throwing as the initial step in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation.

Having nearly gotten through that phase, the Dodgers anticipate Stone beginning to play catch on Saturday or Sunday, per Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group

Stone (shoulder) is expected to start a throwing program this weekend.

Considering Stone needed to go more than one week without throwing, he presumably would only be able to make one start for the Dodgers before the regular season ends on Sunday, Sept. 29.

But a return at some point during the 2024 season is far from of a guarantee. Stone and the Dodgers are effectively at a point where every step of his rehab process needs to go off without a hitch.

Prior to going on the injured list, Stone was the only Dodgers starter to make every turn in the rotation this season. He built on a strong showing in Spring Training and continued to prove growing pains as a rookie last year were behind him.

Stone is 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 25 starts this season.

Dodgers need Gavin Stone

Even before recent developments with Clayton Kershaw and Glasnow, Stone’s importance to the Dodgers for the postseason had already been established.

His value has further increased in the wake of Glasnow’s setback, and the Dodgers will have to consider Stone’s first start back from injury potentially coming in the National League Division Series.
