Dodgers Injury Update: Corey Seager Potentially Returning Wednesday

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of playing the San Francisco Giants seven times in 11 days, and if the current trend holds, will welcome back Corey Seager before the current series at Dodger Stadium concludes.

Seager spent some of the All-Star break at home resting, but reported to Camelback Ranch late last week to resume taking at-bats and participating in simulated games. He reunited with the team in L.A. on Monday, facing Corey Knebel in a simulated game.

“It went well. Corey Knebel threw 15-20 pitches, or something like that. Corey Knebel looked fantastic mixing in the fastball, breaking ball,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

“Corey (Seager), I think took four at-bats. Looked really good, swung the bat well, ran the bases, took grounders, played catch. I see a potential activation sometime here in the short term. We’ll see. I don’t want to put a date.

“Assuming he comes out of it well, Wednesday could certainly be a possibility.”

Seager is expected to only complete minimal activity on Tuesday as the Dodgers gauge how he responds from the latest simulated game.

Should the 2020 World Series MVP indeed be activated on Wednesday, it will mean a return without completing a rehab assignment. Roberts had previously explained the Dodgers would defer to Seager on potentially joining an affiliate and didn’t consider it necessary.

“I think it’s all individual,” Roberts reiterated. “Corey, as in tune with his swing as he is, his focus in the simulated and live at-bats, allows it to be more realistic. So I just don’t think for him in particular a rehab assignment will be necessary.”

Seager returning at opportune time

Even if not Wednesday, the expectation for Seager to soon return from the 60-day injured list comes at a particularly opportune time for the Dodgers. Gavin Lux was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, which has created a need for an everyday shortstop.
