The Los Angeles Dodgers initially hoped a day of rest would be enough for Chris Taylor to recover from an initial diagnosis of a left foot contusion, but he was forced to an early exit upon returning for their Fourth of July game against the Colorado Rockies.

Taylor subsequently underwent a CT scan that revealed a fracture in his left foot, and the Dodgers placed him on the 10-day injured list July 6. A timetable for his return has not been set, but the expectation is after the All-Star Game.

“Obviously the first decision was to put him on the IL, and then each day we’ve just got to figure out how he’s recovering,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week. “But I do think it’s going to be a week to 10 days of no baseball activity, and we’ll go from there.”

When asked if it could be assumed Taylor would not be activated until after the All-Star break, Roberts answered, “With Chris, anything is possible. But I think that’s probably a safe bet.”

Roberts was again questioned about Taylor’s status on Thursday, and said it would be two or three weeks before he’s reinstated.

The Dodgers have not yet decided if another CT scan will be required prior to activating their super utility player.

“There’s a possibility we’ll go back and revisit a scan, but I think it’s just a micro fracture, that it’s going to be per his tolerance at some point in time once we get the swelling out of there and he starts moving around,” Roberts said.

“But again, we could in two weeks go back and do another scan. I’m not sure right now.”

Taylor believed he was going to be capable of playing through the initial discomfort. “It was something that was feeling better before the game and I thought it wasn’t going to be an issue,” he said Monday.

“I thought I would be able to play through it, and it progressively every inning it got worse and worse and got to a point where it wasn’t worth continuing to try to push it. I think I’ve just got to maybe take a day or two off again, and see how it feels.”

How will Dodgers replace Chris Taylor?

For however long Taylor remains on the IL, the Dodgers intend to use a rotation of Jake Lamb, Gavin Lux and Trayce Thompson in left field.

Moreover, Roberts had already committed to Taylor exclusively playing outfield for the remainder of the season in effort to preserve his surgically-repaired right elbow.
