Dodgers Injury Update: Blake Treinen Expected To Return For Padres Series

UPDATE (April 22, 10:15 a.m. PT): The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Blake Treinen on the injured list due to right shoulder discomfort and recalled Garrett Cleavinger.

The Los Angeles Dodgers conclude their seven-game homestand Wednesday when they host the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game series. Like in the previous two matchups, L.A. won’t have Blake Treinen available out of the bullpen due to right arm soreness.

Treinen not being available came to light when Phil Bickford entered in the eighth inning for a high-leverage appearance in the series opener. While Bickford has become a trusted relief pitcher since joining the Dodgers last year, it was a situation often reserved for Treinen.

Treinen has since resumed playing catch and was scheduled to throw from the mound on Wednesday. “Blake’s doing well,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Catch play, got out to about 120 (feet), said he felt good. He’s going to get off the mound [Wednesday] and hopefully it goes well.”

Although Treinen has recovered well, Roberts confirmed he wouldn’t pitch in the Dodgers’ series finale against the Braves. “He’ll get off the mound [Wednesday], he’ll be off on Thursday, and hopefully he’ll be on line Friday,” Roberts said.

Roberts also reiterated he does not expect Treinen to go on the injured list, which under MLB rules for the 2022 season, is still 10 days for pitchers prior to May 2. “No, no. I’m expecting him to be back for the Padres series,” Roberts said.

Treinen off to good start

Treinen hasn’t been on the mound since last Thursday, in the first of a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds. He threw 18 pitches that night and retired all three batters faced in the eighth inning to earn the win.

Treinen is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP, five strikeouts and .100 opponents’ batting average in three innings pitched across three appearances this season.
