The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Michael Petersen from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list due to lower back tightness, retroactive to July 6.
Petersen joined the Dodgers bullpen ahead of the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. He returns to the active roster five days after getting optioned as a corresponding move to Nick Ramirez coming up from Oklahoma City.
The left-handed Ramirez also remained on the Dodgers roster for just one game as part of the bullpen shuffle. The Dodgers were able to recall Petersen so quickly because he is replacing an injured player.
Petersen last pitched for the Dodgers on July 3, when he allowed four runs on four hits over two innings in a lopsided loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Petersen made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in May and is 2-0 with a 4.66 ERA in 9.1 innings across six appearances. He was originally selected out of Riverside Community College by the Brewers in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
The 31-year-old has appeared in 23 games for the Oklahoma City Baseball Club, going 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA.
Dodgers All-Star Tyler Glasnow out
In putting Glasnow on the 15-day IL, the Dodgers are due to finish the week without their ace available. The right-hander threw six innings against the Brewers last Friday and finished with seven strikeouts while allowing five runs.
Glasnow’s trouble in the start occurred in one inning that included giving up a grand slam to Rhys Hoskins. He settled back in to make it through the fifth and sixth innings with only one baserunner reaching via a Gavin Lux error.
“It was important I came back,” Glasnow said of bouncing back from the rocky inning. “We got the runs, so I came back and tried to get a zero to keep the team in the game. … I just had to go throw. We were close in the game, so I just wanted to forget about it, treat every inning like its own and just execute pitches.”
Glasnow’s injury creates another opportunity in the Dodgers rotation for prospect Justin Wrobleski, who made his MLB debut on Sunday. There was also the potential for Gavin Stone to be named to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game as an injury replacement for Glasnow, but that instead went to the Cincinnati Reds’ Hunter Greene.
This is the first time in Glasnow’s career he’s been put on the injured list because of a back issue. The 30-year-old previously has dealt with right forearm, right elbow and left oblique injuries.
