Dodgers Highlights: Gavin Lux, Kiké Hernández & Will Smith Deliver In Walk-Off Win Vs. Red Sox

The Los Angeles Dodgers erased three different deficits late in the game to come away with a 7-6 walk-off win against the Boston Red Sox that clinched a series victory. Saturday’s thrilling win has the Dodgers in position to sweep the Red Sox when they meet for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

Pitching prospect Justin Wrobleski only completed 4.1 innings but it was arguably the best start of his young career. The left-hander held the Red Sox to just three hits and collected five strikeouts against two walks. He exited with a 1-0 lead thanks to the solo home run hit by Gavin Lux in the second inning.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts going to the bullpen immediately backfired as the Red Sox greeted Yohan Ramírez with three consecutive hits, capped off by Jarren Duran’s two-run double that gave Boston a lead.

The Red Sox kept their 2-1 lead until Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff double in the sixth inning was cashed in by Teoscar Hernández tying the game on an RBI single. Andy Pages’ sacrifice fly then gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

Boston nearly pulled even to start the seventh inning but James Outman made an impressive running catch at the wall in center field. However, Anthony Banda then walked Duran and Tyler O’Neill followed that with a two-run homer.

The Red Sox remained ahead until the ninth inning, when Kiké Hernández hit a game-tying solo home run off former teammate Kenley Jansen. Hernández and Jansen not only played together on the Dodgers, which included winning a World Series in 2020, but they also were Red Sox teammates for a portion of the 2023 season.

The home run was the first Jansen has allowed this season. For Hernández, it was a second career game-tying home run in the ninth inning or later, and came on the day he reached the milestone of 10 years of Major League service time.

Excitement Hernández provided ended up being short-lived as Evan Phillips gave up a two-run homer to O’Neill in the 10th inning. But the Dodgers continued to battle and tied the game on Pages’ RBI double and a base hit from Hernández.

After Blake Treinen worked a scoreless 11th inning, Will Smith followed an intentional walk that loaded the bases with a walk-off single.

The walk-off win was the Dodgers’ fourth this season and their seventh victory in extra innings.

Dodgers snap Red Sox streak

With their walk-off win, the Dodgers snapped a Red Sox streak of winning six consecutive one-run games.
