The Los Angeles Dodgers put together another comeback that extended their winning streak to three games, and now they are in position to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Tuesday is the first doubleheader at Dodger Stadium since July 22, 1999, and the first scheduled twin bill since Sept. 17, 1987, which was in order to accommodate Pope John Paul II’s visit to Chavez Ravine.
Tyler Anderson takes the mound in the nightcap for his seventh game (fifth start) of the season. Anderson enters 3-0 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.12 WHIP and is coming off a rough outing his last time out.
If there was a positive from that start, however, Anderson managed to provide length to take some burden off the Dodgers’ bullpen. That would prove beneficial yet again as the team remains in the midst of playing 31 games in 30 days.
Yency Almonte, Phil Bickford, Brusdar Graterol and Daniel Hudson did not appear in the doubleheader opener. However, Hudson did throw 10 pitches during a scoreless inning on Monday night.
Shane Greene also didn’t pitch in the first game, but he was designated for assignment as the corresponding move to the Dodgers activating David Price off the COVID-19 injured list.
As for the Diamondbacks, Merrill Kelly faces the Dodgers for a second time this season. He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings at Chase Field on April 25.
Kelly is 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over seven starts this season.
Mookie Betts went 3-for-4 to finish a triple shy of the cycle in the afternoon affair and extend his hitting streak to five games. Trea Turner has hit safely in nine straight, and Freddie Freeman has a 17-game on-base streak.
