With the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline just around the corner, the Los Angeles Dodgers have already begun making moves as they acquired a pair of arms from the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday in Dylan Floro and Zach Neal.
Both Floro and Neal have spent time in the Dodgers organization before, but Floro was the main piece of the trade as he is expected to immediately bolster the Dodgers bullpen.
The 2012 13th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays was a waiver claim of the Dodgers in Aug. 2017, although he was designated for assignment just a week later and wound up with the Reds this season, where he became an essential part of their bullpen.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts detailed what the Dodgers are getting in the right-hander, via Kaelen Jones of MLB.com:
“Really good sinker,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Floro. “Gets righties out and lefties. Keeps the ball down. He’s a guy that can go multiple innings as well.”
Floro has appeared in 25 games for Cincinnati this season, going 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA, 3.33 FIP and 1.40 WHIP while striking out 27 and walking 12 in 36.1 innings.
Given the number of injuries the Dodgers have been forced to deal with this season, their bullpen has been taxed a bit in the first half so he should help add some depth to that unit.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and his staff have done a nice job of finding relievers that are able to contribute for cheap in recent years, and Floro could be one of those arms. He likely won’t be the only acquisition the Dodgers make in the bullpen as the deadline approaches though.
