The Great Lakes Loons, High-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, announced that manager Austin Chubb will return for his second season with the club.
Chubb becomes just the third skipper in franchise history to manage more than one season in Midland, joining John Shoemaker (2011-2012, 2018-2019) and Juan Bustabad (2008-2010).
“I’m thrilled to be coming back to Great Lakes to work even closer with the front office and engage with the community more than I had an opportunity to last season,” Chubb said in a statement.
“We had a chance at the postseason last year and came up a bit short so we all have a chip on our shoulder to go even further and win a championship in Great Lakes.”
Chubb led the Loons to a 63-57 record and the best run differential in the High-A Central Eastern Division last season, but the club fell just short of advancing to the playoffs.
Chubb is entering his sixth season in the Dodgers organization, previously serving as manager of the Dominican Summer League affiliate and the now-defunct Ogden Raptors.
Prior to becoming a coach, Chubb played four seasons in the Minors. He was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 21st round of the 2012 MLB Draft and ended his career with the Dodgers organization, which included a brief stop with Great Lakes in 2015.
Chubb served as the bench coach under another former Loons manager, Luis Matos, for Indios De Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican Winter League earlier this offseason. The two led the team to a league-leading 21-10 record before seeing their season come to an end in the championship round.
The Loons open their season at home against the West Michigan Whitecaps on April 8.
Hennessey returning as Double-A Tulsa Drillers manager
In addition to Chubb returning as Loons manager, the Double-A Tulsa Drillers will also be getting back skipper Scott Hennessey for the 2022 season.
