Dave Roberts received one first-place vote and 13 points overall to finish in fifth place for 2020 National League Manager of the Year, which went to Don Mattingly of the Miami Marlins in a landslide.

San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler garnered 71 points to Mattingly’s 124 for a second-place finish. The Chicago Cubs’ David Ross, the final finalist, had one vote for first place and checked in third overall with 25 points.

Roberts won Manager of the Year in 2016 — his first season at the helm the Los Angeles Dodgers — and has finished at least in sixth place every year since.

This season Roberts guided the Dodgers to an MLB-best 43-17 record, a third NL pennant and the organization’s first World Series title since 1988. L.A. has reached 100 wins in two of Roberts’ five seasons, and held the top record in three of them, including the past two.

Roberts extended his MLB record that was set in 2019 by leading the Dodgers to yet another NL West title. Roberts now stands as the lone manager in MLB history to oversee his team to a division title in each of his first five full seasons.

Roberts previously joined Tommy Lasorda as the only rookie managers in Dodgers franchise history to usher team to an NL West title when they won it in 2016. With 436 wins to his name, Roberts trails Mattingly by 10 for sixth place on the Dodgers’ all-time list.

After that, next on is Hall of Famer Ned Hanlon with 511 wins. Roberts’ .615 winning percentage is good for third all-time amongst managers in Dodgers franchise history.

No personal satisfaction with World Series

Although Roberts has been the subject of intense scrutiny during his tenure as Dodgers manager, he did not view the team winning the World Series as any sort of personal relief. Instead, Roberts was thrilled by what it meant for the likes of Kenley Jansen, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Turner, among others.

“Happy for Julio. Clayton, when people talk about him it’s World Series champion first, then future Hall of Famer. For Kenley, Justin, everybody. I’m so excited for all these guys,” Roberts said after Game 6.

“I try to not make things personal. I’m just really happy for the organization. I’m happy for the players, I’m happy to help lead this team to a championship. There’s always going to be skeptics, but this is something no one can take away from us.”
