Dodgers Recall Paul Gervase And Send Emmet Sheehan Back To Minors

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Paul Gervase and optioned Emmet Sheehan back to Triple-A Oklahoma City before Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gervase is up with the Dodgers for a fourth time this season. He last had been recalled July 2 but spent only a brief stint at the Major League level as the Dodgers optioned Gervase as one of the corresponding moves to Evan Phillips getting activated off the 60-day injured list July 6.

Gervase has only appeared in four games with L.A. this season, pitching to a 2.35 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. During his time with the Comets, the right-hander has gone 2-1 with a 4.86 ERA over 31 games this year.

The past seven days have now been a bit of a whirlwind for Gervase as he was on the taxi squad last weekend.

Emmet Sheehan returns to Minors

Sheehan now is back with Oklahoma City after joining the Dodgers roster during their series against the Colorado Rockies. He was recalled in the corresponding move to Edwin Díaz landing on the 15-day injured list due to neck inflammation.

Sheehan was placed in the bullpen to provide possible coverage but didn’t pitch in either of the two games he was active for. He was originally demoted on Aug. 3 amid ongoing inconsistency this season.

The Dodgers hoped sending Sheehan to Triple-A would better allow for him to continue addressing mechanical issues without the pressure of performing at the Major League level.

“I think it’s the right thing to do,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said at the time of Sheehan being sent down to Oklahoma City. “It’s going to give him a chance to reset, get out of this hotbox of performance.

“Obviously, we believe in him, we’ve shown that year in and year out, and I just had a good conversation with him. He’ll start on Saturday for that OKC team. Just got to get him back to who he is.”

Sheehan is 4-8 with a 5.29 ERA, 4.75 FIP and 1.29 WHIP in 95.1 innings across 20 starts for the Dodgers this season. In his first game with the Comets, he threw just 22 pitches and recorded two outs in what was a planned shortened outing.

Then in a start on Aug. 12, Sheehan had eight strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless innings. That remains his most recent appearance for either the Comets or Dodgers.

It’s plausible he receives another opportunity out of the bullpen over the final month of the season as the Dodgers prepare for the postseason.
