The Los Angeles Dodgers took the first game of their doubleheader against the New York Yankees on Sunday, but they were unable to complete the series sweep in the finale.

The Dodgers had already taken the series after winning on Friday and again on Sunday morning, following their game being rained out on Saturday.

Prior to the game, the Dodgers added Kyle Hurt to their roster as the 27th man for the doubleheader. He is set to be returned to Triple-A now, but he did appear in the game.

Yankees 2, Dodgers 1: key takeaways

Dodgers offense quiet in loss

The Dodgers struggled on offense for most of the game, but they got their hits when it mattered to complete a comeback. They had no runs on three hits through the first seven innings of the game, but Tommy Edman pinch-hit for Miguel Rojas and tied the game with a solo home run.

After that, Max Muncy and Dalton Rushing both took walks to put two runners on for Shohei Ohtani with just one out. However, Ohtani struck out and then Andy Pages followed by popping up to end the threat and their chance at winning.

The offense went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base while tallying just four hits and four walks. They also hit into two double plays that cost them some scoring opportunities.

However, one of their hits did belong to Eliezer Alfonzo, who picked up the first of his MLB career with a single to center field.

Dodgers bullpen effective, but takes loss

With the doubleheader, the Dodgers decided to utilize a bullpen game instead of going with another one of their starters. The results were effective, despite some struggles from a few of their relievers.

In total, they allowed just one run over their eight innings pitched with six hits allowed and four walks. All of those hits were allowed by two pitchers, and half of them were given up by another.

Will Klein opened the game and allowed the lone run on three hits. He gave up a two-out double to Paul Goldschmidt, and then an RBI single to Cody Bellinger.

Edgardo Henriquez struggled with his command and walked two hitters before throwing a wild pitch that put two runners in scoring position, but Max Muncy was able to record an out at the plate on a ground ball.

Jack Dreyer got the Dodgers out of the inning, but he allowed three consecutive singles to load the bases when he took the mound in the fifth inning. Brock Stewart replaced him with no outs and stranded all the Yankees’ hitters on base.

Stewart threw two perfect innings, and the Dodgers also got two scoreless innings from Hurt and one from Vesia.

Evan Phillips took over in the eighth with a tie game, but allowed a solo home run to Jazz Chisholm Jr. Phillips was credited with the loss.
