Saturday’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather in the area and rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Sunday. It marks the Dodgers’ first postponement of the 2026 season.
New York and the surrounding region had recently been dealing with air quality concerns due to wildfires in Canada, but Saturday saw a rainstorm sweep in during the day and more was expected at night.
Whereas the weekend series was initially scheduled to conclude with a “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcast on NBC, the Dodgers and Yankees now are due to play an afternoon game. First pitch for the rescheduled game is 9:35 a.m. PT, and the second contest remains set for a 4:20 p.m. start time.
Yankee Stadium gates will open at 11 a.m. local for the first game, and at approximately 6 p.m. for the conclusion of the doubleheader. Fans with tickets dated for the July 18 game will be valid only for the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.
There also is the option to exchange those tickets for a similar regular season game (subject to availability).
The Dodgers won the series opener behind a timely home run by Max Muncy and were poised to have Emmet Sheehan take the mound Saturday. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the probable for the series finale.
It’s presumed Sheehan and Yamamoto will start in the doubleheader games, though it’s not yet clear which order that will come in. The Yankees had been scheduled to start Ryan Weathers and Cam Schlittler on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The Dodgers and Yankees will have the option to call up a 27th player as a result of the doubleheader, but he will only be eligible to play in the nightcap.
Dodgers doubleheader history
The Dodgers last played a doubleheader during the 2024 season, coincidentally also when they were in New York but facing the Mets.
In 2023, the Dodgers played two unexpected doubleheaders within a five-day span. The first instance was while they were facing the Cleveland Guardians on the road, and that was followed by a home date being rescheduled because of Hurricane Hilary.
MLB also rescheduled Sunday home games for the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres at the time. That left the Dodgers, Angels and Padres to play doubleheaders on the same day.
At the time of MLB adjusting the three teams’ schedules, Hilary was a Category 4 Hurricane and a Tropical Storm Watch had been issued for Southern California. It is in effect for area from San Diego deserts to the San Bernardino County mountains, along with Catalina Island.
It was the first such warning ever issued for the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.
