The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a key member of their bullpen over the weekend as Blake Treinen was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.
Treinen underwent an RBI on his ailing elbow, which revealed only inflammation and not a more severe injury.
“There was no structural damage with the MRI,” manager Dave Roberts said. “There was just a lot of inflammation that, I think with the wear and tear, sometimes things just spur that. So I don’t think it will be a long thing. Obviously, he’s on the IL, so it’s going to be two weeks. But hopefully it’s not much more beyond that.”
At the time of Treinen’s injury, Roberts expressed concern that the veteran reliever would be sidelined for an extended period. But after his encouraging MRI results, the team is now hopeful he could return after spending the minimum time on the IL, or far closer to that amount than previously anticipated.
Treinen last pitched in the Dodgers’ 6-5 walk-off win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, which saw him throw a scoreless ninth inning. It was his first appearance since June 14.
The Dodgers recalled Chayce McDermott from Triple-A Oklahoma City as the corresponding roster move to Treinen going on the IL. It was the latest blow to a bullpen that has been decimated by injuries this season.
However, help should soon be on the way with Brock Stewart expected to be activated off the IL prior to Monday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins. Evan Phillips is also in the midst of a rehab assignment and could rejoin the Dodgers sometime in early July.
Blake Treinen’s 2026 stats
Treinen has gone 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 games this season while having somewhat of a rebound year. Across 23 innings, he’s struck out 9.78 hitters per nine while walking 3.91 per nine and also pitching to a 3.49 FIP.
Even after a poor 2025 season that saw Treinen post a 5.40 ERA in 26.2 innings, Roberts has maintained his trust in the right-hander by continuing to use him in high-leverage spots. Treinen has recorded six holds and one save while blowing two saves.
The right elbow inflammation marks Treinen’s first time landing on the IL this year. He’s in the final season of a two-year, $22 million contract that was signed in December 2024.
