Blake Treinen Likely To Be Unavailable For Extended Period

Although the Los Angeles Dodgers expect to activate Brock Stewart on Monday and Evan Phillips is nearing a return as well, they absorbed another injury on Saturday by losing Blake Treinen.

Treinen was put on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation in a roster move that came one day after he pitched a scoreless ninth inning in the Dodgers’ walk-off win. It was Treinen’s first appearance since June 14.

“He felt something in his elbow today,” manager Dave Roberts said after Saturday’s loss. “Last night, he came out feeling good, normal. And then he woke up today and his elbow was having a hard time with full extension. We treated it to see how it could go and kick the can a little bit, so at that point in time we got Chayce McDermott moving.”

Roberts added that Treinen underwent an MRI on his ailing elbow, but he wasn’t fully certain of the results. What Roberts and the Dodgers already are expecting is for the 37-year-old to miss a significant amount of time.

“I don’t recall what the diagnosis is, but it’s enough for him to be on the IL and he’ll be down for a minute,” Roberts said. “I think it was more of get rest versus be more aggressive right now.”

Blake Treinen’s injury history

Treinen suffered a right forearm injury last season that resulted in an extended absence. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list and ultimately missed just over three months.

In 2024, he sustained a bruised lung after being hit in the chest by a line-drive comebacker during Spring Training. That season also saw him spend time on the injured list because of left hip discomfort. After being limited to just five appearances in 2022 because of right shoulder trouble, Treinen didn’t pitch in 2023 amid a prolonged recovery process.

The right elbow inflammation marks Treinen’s first time landing on the injured list this year. He’s in the final season of a two-year, $22 million contract that was signed in December 2024.
