Recap: Dodgers Sweep Diamondbacks Behind Will Smith Bobblehead Night Fireworks

There was another pregame ceremony on Saturday for the Los Angeles Dodgers to celebrate winning the 2025 World Series as coaches and support staff received their rings, and the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks then followed a familiar script.

The Dodgers fell behind 2-0 for the third time in as many games and once again erased that deficit thanks to birthday and bobblehead night heroics from Will Smith.

The Dodgers notched 48 comeback wins last season, trailing only the Toronto Blue Jays (49), and added six more in the postseason.

Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 2: key takeaways

Tyler Glasnow’s season debut

Tyler Glasnow pitched six innings and held the Diamondbacks to just two runs in his first start of the season. The right-hander struck out six batters and walked one.

Corbin Carroll’s infield single, which required a challenge on the out call at first base, set the table for the Diamondbacks to take an early lead as Pavin Smith hit an RBI single into left field. Arizona added onto that in the third inning as a leadoff double later amounted to a sacrifice fly from Carroll.

Freddie Freeman heats up

While the Dodgers started the season 2-0, their offense had largely relied on a big inning rather than sustained production. Hits again were sporadic in the series finale, and the big power swing never arrived.

Freddie Freeman did go 3-for-4 and seemingly jumpstarted the comeback by hitting an RBI double when he represented the tying run at the plate with two outs in the sixth inning. Freeman had gone hitless with four fly balls to the warning track or wall over the first two games. Ironically, his final at-bat on Saturday was another fly out to the wall.

The double was Freeman’s 548th of his career, which tied with Alex Rodriguez for 33rd-most in baseball history.

Will Smith bobblehead night

The Dodgers typically avoid having Smith in the lineup three games in a row, but Saturday proved to be an exception with the Diamondbacks starting left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. Smith had just one hit but made it count as it was a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Last season, Smith was not in the Dodgers lineup on his bobblehead night in part because manager Dave Roberts had lost track of the giveaway.
