Dodgers Rumors: Max Muncy Contract Extension Includes Incentives Based On Plate Appearances

Max Muncy has been a big part of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ success since signing a Minor League contract with the organization in 2017 after getting released by the Oakland Athletics.

Muncy is now entering his ninth season with the Dodgers, but could have potentially become a free agent at the end of 2026. However, the two-time All-Star will be sticking around for at least one more season after signing a one-year contract extension worth $7 million.

Muncy’s new deal includes a $10 million club option for 2028 and a $3 million buyout. He became the franchise’s longest-tenured player when Clayton Kershaw retired during the offseason.

According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Muncy’s contract extension with the Dodgers also includes incentives based on his number of plate appearances over the next two seasons:

Max Muncy’s new extension includes, per source:

Can earn up to $2.25M more on his $10M salary for 2026 based on PAs this year

Up to $3.75M onto his $7M salary for 2027 based on his 2026 PAs (401-550)

Up to $3.75M onto his $10M club option for 2028 based on 2027 PAs (401-550)

— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) February 14, 2026

Muncy could earn a maximum of $12.25 million this season if he registers between 401 and 550 plate appearances. Doing so would also add $3.75 million onto his $7 million base salary for 2027.

If Muncy’s club option for 2028 is picked up, he would earn an additional $3.75 million to go along with his $10 million base salary if he reaches the same number of plate appearances in 2027.

Muncy last recorded at least 401 plate appearances during the 2023 season. He was limited to 388 plate appearances this past season due to a left knee bone bruise and right oblique strain.

Muncy managed only 293 plate appearances in 2024 due to a severe right oblique strain that was compounded by a dislocated rib.

Max Muncy explains reason for taking discounts to stay with Dodgers

Muncy has signed several team-friendly contract extensions with the Dodgers and recently explained that he doesn’t mind taking less money because he enjoys being part of the organization.
