The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Blake Snell from the paternity list and placed Alex Vesia on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain prior to Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Snell had been away from the team since after his start on Friday night to be with his wife as the couple welcomed the birth of their second child. Snell threw seven innings and allowed just two runs in the series opener against the San Diego Padres.
He left Petco Park that night was put on the paternity list the following afternoon. MLB’s paternity list allows players to take up to a three-day leave. A player must miss at least one day when put on the paternity lister.
The paternity list was added to MLB’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in 2011, and amongst the Dodgers was previously used by Shohei Ohtani this year.
Snell going on paternity leave was accompanied by Kirby Yates getting activated off the 15-day injured list. Yates then pitched the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Padres as the Dodgers avoided being swept.
Snell is expected to make his next start on Friday, when the Dodgers begin a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the final leg of their homestand.
“They had the baby, and everyone is healthy. That was baby number two. So we’re in a good spot right now,” manager Dave Roberts said.
Snell has a 1.96 ERA across four starts since returning from the injured list. In that span he’s thrown 23 innings with 26 strikeouts to seven walks. In his two starts from Aug. 9-16, Snell pitched 11 scoreless innings.
Alex Vesia’s injury
Vesia’s stint on the injured list is retroactive to Aug. 23, which makes Saturday, Sept. 6 the earliest he can be activated.
Though, considering Vesia’s injury is an oblique strain, he might be looking at more of an extended absence.
Vesia is 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA across 59 appearances this season. He last pitched on Aug. 21, throwing a scoreless inning against the Colorado Rockies.
