Recap: Tyler Glasnow, Dodgers Pitching Struggle In Series Loss To Phillies

On a day when the Los Angeles Dodgers placed Blake Snell on the 15-day injured list because of left shoulder inflammation, they received a disastrous outing from Tyler Glasnow and collective poor pitching performance in an 8-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers are now 1-6 at Citizens Bak Park since June 11, 2023, and haven’t won a series in Philadelphia since the 2022 season. Moreover, the Dodgers suffered their first loss of the season hitting at least two home runs, and are 7-1 in such games.

As a light, but steady, rain fell at Citizens Bank Park, Glasnow suddenly lost feel for the baseball and appeared to be struggling with his footing on the mound during the third inning.

The result was three consecutive walks to load the bases, which set the table for Bryce Harper’s RBI bloop single. A wild pitch then allowed the tying run to score, and a fourth walk in the inning loaded the bases once again and marked the end of the day for Glasnow.

Going to the bullpen did not bring relief for the Dodgers, as Nick Castellanos hit Alex Vesia’s first pitch for a grand slam. The grand slam was Castellanos’ eighth of his career.

While it appeared the Phillies would coast to a series-clinching win, their bullpen faltered. However, Blake Treinen allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, which gave the Phillies their decided lead.

Teoscar Hernández tries to uplift Dodgers

Before Glasnow imploded, he was given an early lead thanks to Teoscar Hernández’s two-run home run in the first inning. Hernández later hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and added an RBI double in the fifth.

The multi-homer game was Hernández’s 19th of his career and first since doing so on the road against the New York Yankees last June. Sunday also was the sixth time in Hernández’s career he’s had a five-RBI game.

Hernández and Tommy Edman combined for four of the Dodgers’ six hits off Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez in his 5.2 innings of work. The southpaw was particularly effective against Shohei Ohtani, who went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts against Sánchez.

After Mookie Betts hit an RBI double in the seventh inning, Hernández’s sacrifice fly cut the Dodgers’ deficit in half and gave him a fifth run driven in. Will Smith’s RBI double tied the game, though it ultimately was all for naught.
