2024 Gold Glove Awards: Jared Triolo Wins Over Kiké Hernández & Brendan Donovan

Jared Triolo of the Pittsburgh Pirates was voted the National League winner for the 2024 Gold Glove Award at the utility position.

It’s the first time time in Triolo’s career he’s won a Gold Glove Award. Triolo bested Los Angeles Dodgers’ Kiké Hernández and Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Donovan was looking to win a second career Gold Glove, as he previously took home the honor as a utility player in 2022.

Gold Glove Award winners for the nine standard positions are determined via vote of MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team. Managers and coaches cannot vote for their own players and are only permitted to submit ballots for those in their same league.

Those votes amount to 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index accounting for the remaining 25%.

For the utility Gold Glove Award, Rawlings collaborates with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.

Triolo started 60 games at third base, 32 at second base, eight at shortstop, four at first base. Triolo was expected to be the Pirates’ starting second baseman but struggled and wound up shifting into a utility role after filling in for Ke’Bryan Hayes.

Did Kiké Hernández deserve Gold Glove Award?

Hernández continued to be a jack of all trades for the Dodgers in 2024 as he played six different positions: first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field and center field. Hernández also pitched again this year, making four appearances.

The 33-year-old has never won a Gold Glove Award in his career.

The 2024 season marked a third consecutive year in which the Dodgers have had multiple Gold Glove Award finalists. In 2023, they were represented by Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and David Peralta.

Will Smith was a 2024 finalist as well, but San Francisco Giants’ Patrick Bailey won the award.
