Dodgers Roster: Brent Honeywell Accepts Assignment To Triple-A Oklahoma City

Brent Honeywell was removed from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 40-man roster and sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City after clearing waivers.

Honeywell was designated for assignment as the corresponding roster move to the Dodgers calling up prospect Ben Casparius. The young right-hander joined the Dodgers for the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals to provide insurance out of the bullpen.

The Dodgers already faced a roster crunch even before Casparius factored into their plans, and Honeywell was a likely DFA candidate once more players were ready to return from the 60-day injured list.

That’s not an indictment on Honeywell, however, as found success since being claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Honeywell going unclaimed on waivers is somewhat of a surprise considering he would have been eligible for the postseason by joining a new team before Sept. 1. Because Honeywell previously has been DFA’d in his career, he had the option to reject the Dodgers’ assignment.

However, he reported to Oklahoma City rather than electing to become a free agent.

Earlier this month, the Dodgers also managed to keep Nick Ramirez in the organization after he cleared waivers upon getting designated for assignment as well. Ramirez was DFA’d as part of multiple moves by the Dodgers to make room on their 40-man roster for additions made at the trade deadline.

Considering the Dodgers recently welcomed back Ryan Brasier, are planning to activate Blake Treinen on Wednesday and Brusdar Graterol is expected to pitch again, it’s likely Honeywell finishes the season with the Oklahoma City Baseball Club.

Brent Honeywell stats

Honeywell went 0-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 10 appearances for the Dodgers.

He spent less than one week with the Pirates and only appeared in two games during that span. Honeywell threw a scoreless inning in his 2024 debut and allowed one run over 2.1 innings on July 10.

When Honeywell was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers organization it represented a reunion with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Honeywell in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, months before Friedman was hired to lead the Dodgers front office.
