Nick Ramirez cleared waivers and was sent outright to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Baseball Club. The Los Angeles Dodgers designated him for assignment on July 30 to make room on their 40-man roster for trade deadline acquisitions.
Because Ramirez was previously outrighted in his career, he had the right to elect free agency instead of accepting the assignment to OKC.
The 35-year-old pitched to a 6.35 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in seven appearances across five separate stints with the Dodgers this season. He has been optioned five times this season, which is the maximum allowed for one year under the MLB collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
If the Dodgers had recalled Ramirez another time this year, he would have needed to remain on their active roster. The only options to remove the left-hander at that point would be if a stint on the injured list was required or to DFA Ramirez.
The Dodgers originally acquired Ramirez from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. That came days after the Yankees DFA’d Ramirez.
While Ramirez has remained part of the Dodgers organization, Gus Varland, who was designated for assignment on the same day, was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox.

Ramirez enjoyed his best season with the Yankees in 2023, when he had a 2.66 ERA, 2.94 FIP and 1.23 WHIP across 40.2 innings in 32 relief appearances. He also had a brief stint with the San Diego Padres in 2021.
