With Teoscar Hernández kicking off the festivities on Monday night by winning the Home Run Derby, the attention now turns to the clash between the American League and the National League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field.
The AL is looking to win its 10th All-Star Game in the last 11 years. They were defeated by the NL, 3-2, in 2023. All in all, the AL is 47-44-2 against the NL in the Midsummer Classic.
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy leads the AL in his home ballpark. The Rangers are only the third reigning World Series champion in MLB history and first since 1939 to host the All-Star Game.
Corbin Burnes gets the start for the AL after a dominant first half with the Baltimore Orioles. He went 9-4 with a 2.43 ERA, 3.36 FIP and 1.05 WHIP in 118.2 innings pitched over 19 starts.
It’s Burnes’ fourth consecutive All-Star Game selection, with his previous three coming as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is helming the NL and named sensational Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Paul Skenes as the starting pitcher. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes is only the fifth rookie in MLB history to start an All-Star Game.
Skenes was called up to the Majors in May and quickly established himself as one of the league’s best pitchers. Through 11 starts, he owns a perfect 6-0 record with a minuscule 1.90 ERA, 2.57 FIP, 0.92 WHIP and 12.1 strikeouts per nine in 66.1 innings.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had six players selected to the All-Star Game, including Shohei Ohtani, who is batting second and serving as DH for the NL. Hernández is batting eighth and starting in center field.
Freddie Freeman and Will Smith will also play in the Midsummer Classic as reserves. Meanwhile, Mookie Betts and Tyler Glasnow both won’t participate due to injury.
For the third year in a row, Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis is handling the play-by-play duties for the exclusive Fox broadcast.
