Recap: Dodgers Rally To Force Extra Innings But Fall To Nationals In 11 Innings

After a rain delay set back the game start time back by more than four hours, the Los Angeles Dodgers had a late rally to force extra innings, but the Washington Nationals still emerged victorious, 7-6, on a walk-off wild pitch.

The Dodgers got on the board early when David Peralta singled to lead off the game and Freddie Freeman doubled him into scoring position. Max Muncy then hit a one-out sacrifice fly to put the Dodgers up 1-0.

However, the Nationals came back when CJ Abrams tripled on a misplay by Jason Heyward to begin the bottom half of the first inning and Lane Thomas followed with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1.

Both Miller and Cole Irvin were locked into a pitcher’s duel for much of the night after that, but the Nationals broke through in the fifth inning.

A lead off walk to Ildemaro Vargas started the rally before he stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error from Will Smith. Luis García then singled to put Washington up 2-1.

Another single from Abrams and Thomas getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Dom Smith, giving the Nationals a 3-1 lead.

Irvin was replaced in the seventh inning and it provided a small spark to the Dodgers’ offense. J.D. Martinez greeted Jordan Weems with a double and came around to score when Kiké Hernández hit a sac fly.

Still, it wasn’t enough for the Dodgers as that was all they scored and the Nationals bounced back in a big way when Thomas hit a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 5-2.

Muncy hit his 34th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to cut the Nationals lead to one in the eighth inning, but the Dodgers left the tying run on base.

James Outman worked a walk with one out in the ninth and proceeded to steal second before taking third on a poor throw. Kolten Wong then tied the game with an RBI single, but the Dodgers left the go-ahead runs on base.

The Nationals put themselves in positon to walk off in the ninth, but Brusdar Graterol was able to pitch out of the jam, sending the game to extra innings.

In the 10th inning, Hernández singled with runners at the corners and two outs to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead. The Nationals then came back to tie it when Keibert Ruiz singled off Ryan Brazier, forcing another inning of play.

The Dodgers didn’t score in the 11th before Gus Varland threw a wild pitch that allowed the Nationals to walk-off.

Bobby Miller set career high strikeout total for Dodgers

Despite the shaky fifth and seventh innings, Miller had the strikeout stuff working throughout the game. He struck out four straight hitters from the third to fourth inning and finished the night with eight punch outs, setting his career high. He exited the game after giving up five runs on six hits over seven innings.
