When the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Freddie Freeman last offseason to a six-year contract, they knew he was bringing a power bat and defensive presence at first base to the team.
Perhaps what wasn’t as readily apparent, however, is they would be getting a source of wisdom and advice in the clubhouse as well.
Freeman has been credited for serving as a mentor to Gavin Lux, and he engaged all teammates in conversations about hitting or off-the-field topics as well.
Freeman serving as a sounding board and lending his knowledge was even instrumental for six-time All-Star Mookie Betts. According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, advice from Freeman helped Betts unlock himself in the batter’s box:
“When it comes to not obsessing over being perfect and being so good and kind of letting-you’re working, obviously-but letting your abilities also take over, that’s probably what I’ve learned most from him.”
If you consider the talent-filled Dodgers clubhouse with superstar veterans such as Betts, Freeman’s contributions of wisdom and leadership display the high value beyond the field that the 2020 National League MVP adds to the team.
Betts, the 2018 American League MVP, clearly benefitted from his conversation with Freeman. The 30-year-old hit a career-high 35 home runs this season and finished the season third in both slugging percentage (.533) and on-base plus slugging (.873) among all qualified outfielders.
Although the Dodgers’ season ended well short of their overall goal, it’s easy to envision leadership from Freeman will only continue to help the team moving forward.
Freddie Freeman nominated for Players Choice Award
Among all first baseman in baseball, Freeman finished the season first in batting average (.325), second in OPS (.918) and third in slugging (.311). His 47 doubles were a career high and 100 RBI marked just the third time he’s reached that benchmark — previously doing so in 2013 and 2019.
Freeman’s fantastic season for the Dodgers has him among the finalists for the Players Choice Outstanding Player Award in the National League.
