Finalists For 2022 MLB Players Choice Awards

The MLB Players Association (MLBPA) announced the full list of finalists for 2022 Players Choice Awards, which have special significance because the winners are selected in balloting among their peers

The winners will be Friday, Nov. 4, on ESPN’s 3 p.m. PT SportsCenter broadcast.

Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt and Shohei Ohtani as the finalists for Player of the Year, while Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien and Brent Suter are the nominees for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, which goes to the player “whose leadership most inspires others to higher levels of achievement.”

Marvin Miller, who served as the Major League Baseball Players Association’s first full-time executive director from 1966-1982 and guided its emergence as one of the country’s strongest and most cohesive labor unions, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in September 2021.

Curtis Granderson, who retired after the 2019 season, won the Miller award four times. Other recent honorees include Semien (2021), Nelson Cruz (2020), Anthony Rizzo (2017), Adam Jones (2015) and Clayton Kershaw (2014).

The 2022 Curt Flood Award, which is given annually to “a former player, living or deceased, who in the image of Flood demonstrated a selfless, longtime devotion to the Players Association and advancement of players’ rights,” will also be announced.

Buck Martinez, Brooks Robinson and Steve Rogers are the 2022 Curt Flood Award nominees. Andre Dawson and Mark Belanger have won the award since its inception in 2020.

Since 1992, the Players Choice Awards have recognized the outstanding on- and off-field performances of players. Voting among all players was conducted in late September.

The Los Angeles Dodgers had Freddie Freeman and Julio Urías named among the 2022 Players Choice Awards finalists. Freeman is a contender for the National League Outstanding Player Award while Urías is in the running for the NL Outstanding Pitcher Award.

In addition to the Marvin Miller Man of the Year and Player of the Year winners, Outstanding Players, Pitchers, Rookies and Comeback Players in both the American and National Leagues will be recognized.
