The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tony Gonsolin on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation and recalled Dennis Santana prior to the series finale against the Colorado Rockies. Gonsolin’s stint is retroactive to April 1.

He had yet to appear in a game this season after making the Opening Day roster for the first time in his young career. Gonsolin was among the starters the Dodgers were counting on to provide some versatility out of the bullpen.

L.A. had hoped Gonsolin would overcome the shoulder trouble but were forced to take action after he played catch Sunday at Coors Field. “I don’t know the timeline,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of when Gonsolin may return.

“It’s something that’s kind of been lingering for the last few days. He went out there and played catch today, didn’t feel great. I think it’s more of just really being cautious with Tony, obviously being such a big part of our club.

“He was unavailable [Saturday] night. We wanted to kind of see how he felt this morning to see if he would be able to pitch today.”

Gonsolin went 2-2 with a 2.31 REA in nine games (eight starts) for the Dodgers last season.

Santana joins Dodgers from taxi squad

Teams are permitted to carry a five-man taxi squad this season, which Santana was part of for the Dodgers’ first road trip of the season. The group also includes Garrett Cleavinger, DJ Peters, Luke Raley and Keibert Ruiz (required third catcher).

Santana was under consideration for the final bullpen spot on the Opening Day roster, which went to Scott Alexander. “Very, very difficult decision,” Roberts said at the time. “We thought Dennis had a great spring and really impressed with his progress, command and all that stuff. There’s really no viable reason or answer.

“It’s just more of a numbers game. We just felt right now, Scott has earned that roster spot. … They’re both talented guys, they both get left and right out. You can kind of dissect it any way you want, but right now we felt Scott fits better on our roster.”

Santana is in his fourth season with the Dodgers. He went 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 12 games last year.
