The second day of the 2023 MLB Draft saw the Los Angeles Dodgers look to both the high school ranks and collegiate level, with their two picks in the free agency compensation round both coming from universities.
With the 136th overall pick, the Dodgers drafted outfielder Dylan Campbell out of University of Texas. Campbell was a star Texas high school football player but has focused on baseball since reaching college.
Campbell hit .339/.436/.603 with 19 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs in 64 games during his junior year. Included in that was a 38-game hitting streak that was a Big 12 conference record.
The Dodgers had a compensation pick after the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft due to Tyler Anderson rejecting their qualifying offer and signing a three-year, $39 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
The No. 136 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft comes with a $473,700 slot value.
Also in the compensation round, the Dodgers drafted pitcher Eriq Swan out of Middle Tennessee State with the 137th pick.
The Dodgers had that pick due to Trea Turner rejecting the qualifying offer before signing an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Swan played primarily played shortstop during high school, but has seen a velocity increase of nearly 10 mph since becoming a full-time pitcher at Middle Tennessee State. However, the right-hander has a 6.54 ERA in his collegiate career.
