One month after the MLB trade deadlined passed, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Andrew Vasquez from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Stevie Berman.
Neither Berman nor Vasquez were on a 40-man roster at the time, which made the Minor League trade a possibility. Furthermore, because it was finalized roughly 10 minutes before 12 a.m. ET on Sept. 1, Vasquez was eligible to appear in the postseason for the Dodgers.
He was added to their active roster on Sept. 2 and made two appearances before getting optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sept. 6.
Vasquez made his Dodgers debut in extra innings against the San Francisco Giants, and also appeared in the series finale at Oracle Park. He threw a combined 1.2 innings, allowed one unearned run and collected three strikeouts.
The southpaw was recalled in late September but again had a brief stay with the Dodgers and didn’t appear in a game during that second stint with the club.
In six games for OKC, Vasquez pitched to a 3.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. He was non-tendered by the Dodgers and became a free agent at the beginning of December.
Vasquez was selected out of Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., by the Kansas City Royals in the 44th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. However, he elected to attend college and was later taken by the Twins in the 32nd round of the 2015 Draft.
Vasquez made his MLB debut with the Twins during the 2018 season, appearing in nine games. He left-hander went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, 3.36 FIP and 1.40 WHIP across five innings of work.
Vasquez’s 2021 highlight
Although it came in a losing effort, Vasquez struck out two of three batters faced as he retired the side in the eighth inning against the Giants on Sept. 5.
2022 outlook
The 28-year-old figures to sign a Minor League contract with an invitation to 2022 Spring Training and will again provide organizational depth either for the Dodgers or another club.
