Dodgers Roster: Miguel Vargas Optioned, Cavan Biggio Activated

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City in order to add Cavan Biggio to their active roster prior to Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

The Dodgers acquired Biggio and cash considerations in a trade that sent Minor League pitcher Braydon Fisher to the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto designated Biggio for assignment last week amid ongoing struggles at the plate this season.

Biggio hit just .200/.323/.291 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in 44 games for the Blue Jays this year. The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio impressed upon making his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2019 and followed it up with another productive season in 2020, but has otherwise failed to meet expectations.

The Blue Jays once had visions of Biggio, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette forming the core of a team that would contend in the American League East.

Now with the Dodgers, Biggio will get an opportunity to revamp his career as a versatile option off their bench. He has primarily played second base but also is capable of manning first base, third base and all three outfield spots.

Biggio is wearing No. 6 with the Dodgers.

Does Miguel Vargas have future with Dodgers?

Last season the Dodgers planned on Vargas becoming their everyday second baseman but he never quite took hold of the role.

Some of that was attributed to getting hit by a pitch during Spring Training and again early in the year, while there were also defensive growing pains with adjusting to a new position. Vargas’ struggles ultimately led to getting demoted to Oklahoma City during the All-Star break.

He remained in Triple-A to finish the year and began this season with Oklahoma City. Vargas only joined the Dodgers roster last month due to Max Muncy going on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right oblique.

While there doesn’t appear to be a role for Vargas with the Dodgers at present time, he could factor more prominently in their outfield next season and beyond. Another possibility is the former top prospect becomes a trade chip, similar to Michael Busch.
