World Series Recap: Freddie Freeman Hits Walk-Off Homer In 18th Inning Of Game 3

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays were locked into an extra innings battle in Game 3 of the 2025 World Series, and it included 10 consecutive scoreless innings from the eighth through 17th inning.

But Freddie Freeman had enough of the lack of scoring, and in the 18th inning, he blasted a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th inning against Brendon Little to give the Dodgers a 6-5 win.

The 18-inning game tied the record for the longest game in World Series history, previously set by the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox in 2018. However, it was still the second-longest World Series game in terms of time, lasting 6 hours and 39 minutes compared to seven hours and 20 minutes in 2018.

Going back to the start of the game, things went well for the Dodgers early as Teoscar Hernández put them up 1-0 in the second inning with a solo home run, and then Shohei Ohtani added another solo shot in the third inning to make it 2-0.

But the Blue Jays answered back in the fourth as things went sideways for the Dodgers. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took a leadoff walk, and then Bo Bichette reached on an error from Tommy Edman.

Alejandro Kirk then blasted a three-run home to put the Blue Jays up 3-2. After another pair of singles from Addison Barger and Ernie Clement, Andrés Giménez hit a sacrifice fly that gave them a four-run inning.

The Dodgers tied things up in the fifth inning as Kiké Hernández singled and scored on a double from Ohtani. Freddie Freeman then singled home Ohtani to make it a 4-4 ballgame.

Toronto re-took the lead in the seventh when Bo Bichette singled home Guerrero, who reached on a single. But once again, Ohtani came though and tied things up with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Tyler Glasnow turned in just 4.2 innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Had it not been for Edman’s error, Glasnow’s night likely would have looked much different.

Blake Treinen was the only other Dodgers pitcher to allow a run as he gave up the single to Bichette. Anthony Banda, Justin Wrobleski, Jack Dreyer and Roki Sasaki combined to throw 4.1 innings without a run scoring.

The game ended up going to extra innings, thanks to a few heads up defensive plays from both teams. For the Dodgers, Emmet Sheehan pitched two scoreless, while Jeff Hoffman matched him for the Blue Jays.

Sheehan ended up giving the Dodgers another two outs in the 12th inning, but exited the game with the bases loaded for Clayton Kershaw. The decision worked out as Kershaw retired Nathan Lukes with a ground ball.

After Kershaw’s one out, Edgardo Henriquez pitched a scoreless 13th and 14th inning, while the Dodgers left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the 13th. Edman started them off with a double, then after a bunt and pop up, the Blue Jays intentionally walked Ohtani and Mookie Betts before Freeman flied out.

Will Klein also worked a career-high four scoreless innings on 72 pitches, getting the Dodgers to the bottom of the 18th in a 5-5 tie. He was also the last pitcher available in their bullpen, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto started warming up for the 19th.

Shohei Ohtani sets and ties multiple record

Ohtani’s second homer of the night was his eighth home run this postseason, which tied Corey Seager for the Dodgers franchise record. Seager hit his eight homers during their 2020 World Series run, which concluded with him winning World Series MVP.

Ohtani also became the first player in MLB history with three multi-homer games in a single postseason. In addition, Ohtani became the first player in postseason history to reach base seven times in a single game, and he reached nine times with four hits, four intentional walks and another walk.

The four times Ohtani was intentionally walked set a postseason record for a single game. The nine times Ohtani reached base in a single game tied an MLB record.
