World Series Preview: Dodgers Try To Prevent Yankees From Making MLB History

The 2024 World Series continues at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, with the Los Angeles Dodgers just one win away from clinching their eighth title in franchise history.

Jack Flaherty gets the ball in Game 5, which marks his second start of the Fall Classic. He dominated the New York Yankees in the opener, allowing just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched.

Flaherty’s lone blemish was a two-run homer allowed to Giancarlo Stanton that gave the Yankees a lead. However, the Dodgers would eventually tie the score and win the game on Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in the 10th.

“Just one pitch at a time. It was an incredible atmosphere, unbelievable setting. That dude over there, he’s a stud. It’s just one pitch at a time,” Flaherty said after the game.

“Make a mistake, and Giancarlo puts a good swing on the ball, which is what he’s done all postseason and throughout his entire career. So you’d like that one back, but you’ve got to go out and get ready for the next one. So it was good.

“Adjustments were made, and now we’ve got to go make a couple more and just review today and go over it, take the good, and then just pitch by pitch on the next one.”

Flaherty’s first postseason with the Dodgers has been a mixed bag thus far as he turned in two subpar outings against the San Diego Padres and New York Mets. But the right-hander has also found success in starts against the Mets and Yankees.

New York counters with Gerrit Cole, who is also coming off a solid outing in Game 1. He held the Dodgers to just one run on four hits in six innings of work.

Cole has been excellent this postseason, pitching to a 2.82 ERA in four starts. However, he has struggled at times at Yankee Stadium, as evidenced by his home ERA of 4.31 compared to a 2.49 ERA on the road.

While the Yankees staved off elimination on Tuesday night, no team has ever forced a Game 6 in the World Series after falling into a 3-0 deficit.
