Waiting Game For Caleb Ferguson To Join Dodgers Paternity List

The Los Angeles Dodgers paternity list for the 2023 season has seen four players step away from the team to become fathers, and Caleb Ferguson is poised to join that group at a moment’s notice.

Ferguson’s wife, Carissa, is past last week’s due date to give birth to the couple’s first child. The Dodgers just completed a homestand and now are on the verge of leaving Southern California after playing the series finale against the San Diego Padres.

“You just don’t know what’s going to happen,” manager Dave Roberts said over the weekend. “I know his wife is doing well, ready to have the baby. We’re just kind of waiting like everybody else is. Once it happens, we’re just going to read and react, and figure out what the corresponding move would be.”

Ferguson threw a scoreless inning in Saturday’s 2-1 win against the Padres. He followed that with another scoreless frame on Sunday.

Overall this season, the lefty reliever is 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 15 games.

Whenever Ferguson does go on the paternity list, MLB roster rules will require him to be away from the team for at least one day. Ferguson may not miss more than three days while on paternity leave.

Once the time comes for the 26-year-old to be by his wife’s side, the Dodgers could choose to replace him on the active roster with a starting pitcher. Gavin Stone would be a plausible option, particularly if Ferguson has to step away from the Dodgers during their upcoming series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Recalling Stone would allow for him to start Wednesday, pushing Clayton Kershaw back to the weekend for a second consecutive outing against the Padres.

Dodgers paternity list

So far this season, the Dodgers paternity list has comprised of Mookie Betts, Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol and Max Muncy.

Although no longer part of the team, Cody Bellinger recently was on leave to welcome the birth of his second child.
