The Los Angeles Dodgers are visiting the White House on Friday morning to celebrate their 2020 World Series title in what’s the first such event since the team captured the championship.
Because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Dodgers weren’t able to enjoy a customary World Series celebration that centered around some form of a parade. Instead, the Dodgers to this point were limited to a World Series ring ceremony and raising a 2020 championship banner at Dodger Stadium.
A live stream of the Dodgers’ visit with President Joe Biden can be watched on the White House’s website or in the embedded video below. The event is being held in the East Room at approximately 8:40 a.m. PT.
The Dodgers are the first of any 2020 champions to visit the White House, which the L.A. Lakers had hoped to do during their stop in Washington D.C. as part of a road trip.
Given the country is still in the early stages of fully reopening, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts initially wasn’t certain if the team would be fortunate enough to visit the White House because of some restrictions still being in place.
“Its a thrill for me and everyone in the clubhouse,” Roberts said after the Dodgers’ 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals in a rain-shortened game Thursday night.
“I remember back when I was younger, you would see NFL champions or teams that won the World Series go to the White House.
“To see that it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2020 World Series champions, it’s special for players, coaches, staff, ownership, front office and our fans to see people they root for year in and year out, representing them in the White House. It’s a real big moment for us.”
Brusdar Graterol and Corey Seager are both with the Dodgers for the celebration. Graterol was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on June 5, and Seager remains on the injured list as he continues to recover from a right hand fracture.
Second gentleman visits Dodgers
The night before making their way to the White House, the Dodgers were visited in the clubhouse at Nationals Park by husband to Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Douglas Emhof.
