The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed their eight World Series championship in franchise history as they defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday night.
The 2024 title is the club’s seventh since moving to Los Angeles and their first five-game World Series win since 1988 over Oakland. In addition, it’s also the Dodgers’ second title in the last five years after they also won the 2020 World Series.
The Dodgers and Yankees played in the World Series an MLB record 12th time. It’s the Dodgers’ fourth time prevailing over the Yankees in the Fall Classic.
Prior to this year, the last time the two teams squared off in the postseason was in 1981, when Tommy Lasorda was managing a Dodgers team that overcame a World Series deficit after losing the first two games.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers moved into a tie with the San Francisco Giants for the fourth-most World Series titles all-time in MLB history. Playing in the World Series 21 times, many of those came when they called Brooklyn their home.
Freddie Freeman was voted the unanimous World Series MVP after hitting .300 (6-for-20) with four home runs, including the dramatic 10th-inning walk-off grand slam to give Los Angeles a victory in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
Freeman hit home runs in a World Series record six consecutive games, dating back to 2021. He also became the first player in MLB history to hit home runs in each of the first four games of the World Series.
In the clincher, he went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk while delivering a clutch two-run single during the Dodgers’ five-run fifth inning that set the stage for their come-from-behind victory. Despite playing in just five games, Freeman’s 12 RBI tied him with Bobby Richardson (1960) for the most in a single World Series.
To get to the World Series, the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series, and the New York Mets in Championship Series before dispatching the Yankees in five to finish with an 11-5 record in the postseason.
Dodgers World Series parade details
The Dodgers World Series parade is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, which coincides with what would have been Fernando Valenzuela’s 64th birthday.
Valenzuela passed away last week, days before the Dodgers began their World Series showdown against the Yankees.
The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PT at Gloria Molina Grand Park on Spring Street in front of City Hall. Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass will officially kick off the celebration, which will then continue on a 45-minute route from 1st Street to Grand Avenue to 5th Street, culminating at the intersection of 5th and Flower Street, with members of the Dodgers traveling atop double-decker buses.
Dodgers fans wishing to attend and line the parade route are emphatically encouraged to take public transportation due to significant street closures and limited public parking.
Following the parade, a special ticketed event at Dodger Stadium will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m. For fans attending, parking gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and stadium entry gates will open at 9 a.m.
