Tyler Glasnow Making Progress Toward Starting Rehab Assignment

Tyler Glasnow has been sidelined for nearly three months due to lower back spasms, but continues to make progress toward returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers rotation.

The right-hander faced hitters last Friday for the first time since going on the injured list and threw 25 pitches while reportedly sitting in the mid-to-upper 90s with his fastball.

Glasnow is now scheduled to face batters a second time at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday.

“Glass has a live here at Dodger Stadium,” manager Dave Roberts said before the team’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners.

If all goes well in that throwing session, Glasnow’s next step could be joining a Minor League affiliate for the start of a rehab assignment.

“I hope so. Yeah, from what I hear, he’s in a good spot. So yes,” Roberts said of Glasnow potentially advancing to pitching in games.

Glasnow’s rehab assignment is expected to be lengthy considering all of the time he has missed. The 32-year-old could potentially be activated during the second half of August, but the Dodgers will continue to err on the side of caution with him. Pitchers can remain on a rehab assignment for up to 30 days.

L.A. wants to make sure Glasnow is completely healthy before bringing him back as he should once again factor prominently into their postseason plans.

Glasnow was off to a strong start for the Dodgers prior to his back trouble, going 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA, 3.26 FIP, 0.83 WHIP, and 11.1 strikeouts per nine in 39.2 innings pitched across seven games.

Tyler Glasnow’s fast progression

After an unexpectedly long recovery that included multiple setbacks, Glasnow’s progression began to accelerate after throwing a fastball-only bullpen session earlier this month.

“I think for Glas, it’s more of how he feels after the fact, because I think that there’s been times where he’s played catch, he’s thrown ‘pens, and then feels good until he doesn’t,” Roberts said.

“The back is a little tricky. I haven’t seen him today. Hopefully, he comes in feeling good today, and then when he throws his ‘pen, we can just keep kind of moving the needle. But trying to get a good base so we don’t have a setback. because obviously now, in the middle of the season, setbacks are going to be hard to overcome now.”
