Tyler Glasnow has been on the injured list since April 28 due to right shoulder inflammation, but he appears to be close to returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation.
Glasnow made his third rehab start for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets on Thursday, and he gave the Dodgers what they were hoping to see out of him.
The right-hander pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight and only walking one.
The Pacific Coast League is an offensive-heavy environment, and the Dodgers care more about the quality of pitches than results on a rehab assignment, so they were happy with what Glasnow was able to do.
“It was good,” manager Dave Roberts said. “He got into fifth inning, I think he got close to 80 pitches. Had a longer first inning, but the last four were really good.
“So positive day for Tyler. Really, really good stuff. And I haven’t watched the video yet, but from what I heard, really good stuff.”
Glasnow began his rehab assignment on June 22 for the Comets, and he pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. His control was off in that game as he walked three, but that’s normal for a pitcher who hasn’t thrown in a game in quite some time.
Glasnow followed that one up with a poor outing, allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. After that, Roberts said the Dodgers could bring him back to the rotation soon, but indicated the Dodgers would need to see a good start from Glasnow on his rehab assignment before they activate him.
Tyler Glasnow making next start with Dodgers?
Glasnow has now become an option to return to the Dodgers rotation, and the front office could make the call to activate him for his next start after some discussions.
“We’ll see,” Roberts said. “We’re going to circle up, but I’m hopeful.”
The 31-year-old is currently on the 60-day IL, so the club would need to make a corresponding move on the 40-man roster to activate him.
Given the off day next Thursday, Glasnow could be an option to start on Wednesday, July 11, against the Milwaukee Brewers, or some time in the series against the San Francisco Giants beginning next Friday.
Glasnow has made five starts this season, but has been limited in three of them. He owns a 4.50 ERA in 18 innings this year, striking out 29.9% of hitters and walking 14.3% with a 1.28 WHIP.
